HBO announces the start of production on its new original series, COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE. The series will be based on Laura Esquivel’s 1989 novel, published in more than 30 languages, and adapted into one of the most successful Latin American films in the world. The HBO original production will be filmed in Mexico under the direction of renowned fiction series directors Julian de Tavira and Ana Lorena Perez Rios.
This new original production will feature star performances by Ariel Award winner Irene Azuela (Quemar las naves), Azul Guaita (Mi marido tiene familia), Ari Brickman (HBO’s Sr. Ávila, Max Original Asesino del olvido), Ana Valeria Becerril (Max Original Las Bravas), Andrea Chaparro (¿Encontró lo que buscaba?, Rebelde), Andrés Baida (Los elegidos, Control Z), Ángeles Cruz (HBO’s Capadocia) and Louis David Horné (La negociadora), making this story an interesting mix of talent already well known to Latin American audiences and promising young Mexican actors.
“We are very proud to announce the start of production of COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE, a project that brings together all the elements that as content creators we aspire to have in a story: a powerful plot that immerses us in a universe as particular as that of Latin American magical realism, which is deeply rooted in our culture, made in conjunction with great creators and local talent, with a huge projection to travel globally and developed with the seal of quality that characterizes HBO,” shared Mariano César, Head of General Entertainment Content for Warner Bros. Discovery in Latin America and US Hispanic. “With this production we continue to reinforce Warner Bros. Discovery’s commitment to offer the best stories for our audience, developed with outstanding producers from our region. I am convinced that this great project is in the best hands with Ventanarosa Productions, Endemol Shine North America and Endemol Shine Boomdog leading the production”, he concluded.
COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE is executive produced by Salma Hayek Pinault, José Tamez and Siobhan Flynn for Ventanarosa Productions; Sharon Levy, Lisa Fahrenholt, and Flavio Morales for Endemol Shine North America; Alejandro Rincón, Jerry Rodriguez and Clara Machado, with Manuel Vargas, who oversees physical production, for Endemol Shine Boomdog; and Mariano Cesar, Mônica Alburquerque and Anouk Aarón for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Behind the scenes of COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE are well-known and highly regarded industry creators, including showrunner Francisco Javier Royo Fernández, better known as “Curro Royo” (Desaparecidos, Capitán Alatriste) and series writers, María Jaén (Com si fos ahir, Madres. Amor y Vida), and Jimena Gallardo (Ingobernable, Como dice el dicho). Amanda Cárcamo, who worked on productions such as El Norte sobre el vacío and Chicuarotes, is overseeing costumes for this production set during the Mexican Revolution. In addition, Antonio Muñohierro is designer of production and Ximena Amman and Diego Tenorio lead the direction of photography.
This first series adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s novel will show that tradition is not always the best way. Protagonists Tita de la Garza and Pedro Muzquiz are two souls in love who cannot be together due to ingrained family customs, which will force Tita to navigate with magical tints and flavors between the destiny dictated by her family and the fight for her love, while we accompany her in her greatest refuge: the kitchen.
