New production label Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic is teaming with acclaimed Mexican actor/comedian José Eduardo Derbez to develop several new unscripted series, it was announced today by Marie Leguizamo, Managing Director, Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic.

The Banijay-owned studio has developed two new projects for Derbez to host, “Jinxed” and “Mexico Oscuro.” Derbez, who has appeared in numerous Spanish-language films and TV series, is also co-developing/producing “Mexico Oscuro” with Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic.

Derbez’s Prime Video comedy “Mi Tio” reached #1 for the streaming platform in Mexico and he recently participated in Prime Video’s unscripted series, “De Viaje con los Derbez.” He has also starred in numerous series with Televisa, including “Mis XV,” “Qué Pobres tan Ricos,” “Amores con Trampa,” “Renta Congelada” and many others.

“As we continue to ramp up our development efforts in our first year, we couldn’t be more excited to be partnering with someone as talented as José Eduardo on these compelling new series,” says Leguizamo. “He has tremendous experience as a comedian, actor and host, which is ideal for these two new productions.”

Added Derbez, “When my friends from Banijay talked to me about these projects, I didn’t hesitate on accepting them. We have been working on both projects, incorporating different ideas and we are sure that both of them will be successful.”

Derbez, who is slated to host both “Jinxed” and “Mexico Oscuro,” currently hosts Unicable’s “Member’s on Air” and is the main protagonist in the HBO film, “Mamá Para Rato.”

“Jinxed” is an exciting new game show developed by Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic that features a unique twist. The series will feature contestants who suffer from a string of bad luck and thanks to that bad luck, now get a chance to win large cash prizes.

“Mexico Oscuro” explores the country’s high concentration of paranormal sightings and tales—an area that has long fascinated Derbez. In each episode, Derbez and a paranormal expert will invite a celebrity to join them for a spooky experience, visiting a location in Mexico known for its legends, apparitions and or paranormal events.

Banijay Mexico & U.S. Hispanic, which officially opened its doors earlier this year, recently set up a production Hub in Mexico City, where it is producing the Amazon Prime Video hit “LOL: Last One Laughing” (LOL) for viewers in Mexico, Colombia and Argentina. Jose Eduardo’s father Eugenio Derbez, hosts and serves as an EP on “LOL: Last One Laughing” Mexico. The studio also recently signed global superstar Becky G to co-produce an unscripted docu-series following emerging all-female Latin group ANGEL22.
